Today we would like to discuss the Warcaster Captain Jerimiah Kraye. This Dev Talk will end Monday, 12/6, at 5pm PDT.

Kraye is a member of the Cygnaran Reconnaissance Service (CRS). His fiction is all about gaining information and relaying it back from the front lines. His rules should reflect his ability to do this efficiently and effectively. Hit and run tactics, avoidance, and objective completion should all be key points. Iron Horse is a part of his design and must be maintained.

When commenting on this thread please list what you currently like about Kraye and what you do not like about Kraye. When making suggestions for how to mold his rules to fit the above stated design intent. While Kraye changed a fairly large amount in the new edition and generally we do not like to revert those changes, but with proper thematic reasoning or interesting and compelling interaction these rules/spells are not off the table.

We are using this discussion as a guide for where the community would like to see Kraye end up. Please keep your posts positive and constructive.

Currently Kraye stays in the middle of two worlds without being able to get the maximum of each. He has melee oriented abilities (Easy rider, feat and iron horse for heavy warjacks) but as Easy rider costs him almost all his focus, he is unable to deliver much of them as he has not enough focus to do so. With that he has a long reach to get his target but lack Haley's ability to power many warjacks. and the later is prefered to him for melee oriented lists.


He is also a ranged oriented caster as iron horse allow for an hit and run long ranged attrition game but as he has no ability to ignore stealth, he is unable to get those targets and fall behind Sloan, Caine3 who get better ranged games.

I think that his polyvalent playstyle is what makes him enjoyable but the unability to perform well on each style is what hinders players from actually considering him seriously.

From his description, I'm imagining Kraye going to ennemy lines favouring dusk, dawn and fog. while the ennemy is still trying to figure from where the attack will be coming and how many forces are firing at them, Kraye quicly picks his targets, launch quick attacks onto them and then retreat in fog.

To enforce this playstyle, I would change his spell list as follow:
I would swap pursuit for Dog pile. Like Kaya, Kraye choose targets and launch his heavy warjacks at them from directions they do not expect.
I would also swap bullet dodger for fog of war. Fluff wise, Kraye favors light reconnaissance troops such as Black13th and rangers and fog of war would greatly synergise with them.
I'm not sure about Admonition that would perhaps trigger too much long distance hit and run coupled with reposition from Iron horse. But It would definitely ensure hit&run playstyle.
Arcane blast is what it is, an offensive cygnarian attack spell that is neither good nor really bad.
For the feat, as dog pile is quite redundant with it, I might go with boosted attacks for friendly models in his control range. I'm also considering giving Dodge in control range to friendly faction models to reflect his troops and warjacks that evades the opponent counter attacks.

My last concern is about having back Mage sight, but it doubles with dop pile.

On his stat line, he might appreciate Steady as he is used to going into forrests which are tricky places.

Je t'ai rejoint sur Fog of War qui pourrait remplacer Bullet Dodger :)
J'ai aussi proposé Admonition à la place de Pursuit, qui est un peu compliqué à utiliser.

Dog Pile est une idée intéressante, néanmoins ! J'ai évoqué une idée similaire avec une capacité type "Flare" ou "Hunter Mark" sur sa carabine, qui pourrait être rigolo.

Kraye is definitely my favorite caster. From all my games with him (MK2 and MK3), I cast Pursuit only once. Arcane Blast : never. Easy Rider : sometimes. Bullet Dodger/Full Tilt : each game.

He is a hit'n'run warcaster, and a CRS warcaster : his spell list, abilities and equipment should entirely reflects this. And I don't think there is a lot to do to reach that.

- Firstly, I would replace Bullet Dodger with Fog of War. It extends the DEF bonus to all his army, and it is thematic with his CRS job. Eventually, it open a lot of options about list building (from a full stealth force, with rangers and Commandos, to a high DEF light gunline with Gun Mages/Blazers force. Without forgeting Stormknights, which could be delivered more easily)

- Secondly, Pursuit is nice, but can be difficult to cast, exposing Kraye himself. To keep hit'n'run flavour about it, I could see it switched for Admonition, which is easier to apply.

- Thirdly, I think his abilities/weaponry as a CRS veteran are a bit missing on his card. I think he could have True Sight, and something else on his carbine, like :
* Flare : it would reinforce the ranged game of his list, with a recall to the old Mage Sight.
* or a 'Hunter Mark' version for BG only.
It would make his activations more relevant/interesting (other than just upkeeping Bullet Dodger and do 2 random shots) as well as reflects his capacities of CRS warcaster.

- Eventually, I would give "Boosted attack melee roll for warjacks" back to his feat. It's a kind of focus multiplier a warjack caster needs to be really effective. If the "Hunter Mark" thingy is put on his carbine shot, the part about "free charge" could even be removed.

Veteran leader (Rangers) and Steady would be icing on the cake : it definitely would add flavor to the character.

I don't think a BG SPD buff, like Mobility/Escort, is needed. Sure, it would make a Stormclad threatening 14" with the feat. But I see it a bit overkill with hit'n'run tactics. It would be nice, but I don't think Kraye really needs that. I would also keep Easy Rider, which is one of the only way in Cygnar to get a full army pathfinder, especially in theme force.

Je butais un peu sur la composante distance du caster, vu que dog pile et mage sight sont un peu redondant. Mais un petit flare sur le gun permettrait de bien compléter le côté, "je choisis mes cibles et je m'en débarasse"

D'ailleurs, je me rends compte que Hunter Mark sur la carabine + Feat, ça fait aussi une charge de Stormclad à 14" (même si ça reste moins puissant qu'un Escort/Mobility, qui donne un +2" SPD/mouv "brut").
