Simon Berman ~ is the Community Coordinator and a staff writer at Privateer Press where he writes fiction for WARMACHINE, HORDES, and the upcoming Iron Kingdoms Full Metal Fantasy Role-Playing Game. Simon has been writing for Privateer since 2008 and managing Privateer’s social media and online communities since 2009.

Simon Berman
Enrico Nardini (EN) – Privateer Press made its start with RPG products (The Witchfire Trilogy, Player’s Guide to the Iron Kingdoms). How has the RPG work Privateer Press has done in the past informed design of the new RPG?

Simon Berman (SB) – That’s an interesting question. Many of the people working on the new game were not a part of the original IKRPG writing from a decade ago, though almost all of us have worked in a professional capacity on other RPGs. However, Matt Wilson and Jason Soles were our lead developers on the project and they have, of course, been here since the very beginning. Doug Seacat has also been here for almost as long and he did a lot of the original world building for the setting. The three of them all had very specific ideas about how our world should be presented as both a setting and as a game. Those of us who have come more recently to Privateer all did so as tremendous fans of the Iron Kingdoms long before we worked here. I think we’ve created a game that will give players an extremely comprehensive and immersive opportunity to explore western Immoren.

EN – Comments in the preview video seemed to imply a similarity in mechanics between the developing RPG and the Warmachine/Hordes miniature games (references to a life spiral and dice mechanics). How has PP’s work with miniature games influenced the game’s design?

SB – The core mechanics of the new game are essentially those of WARMACHINE and HORDES. In brief, to attempt an in-game action, the player rolls 2d6 and adds a target value to that number in an attempt to equal or exceed a target number. We’ve been using this mechanic in WARMACHINE for over a decade and through two editions of the game; it’s a system we really understand. The challenge has been taking that system from the abstract and over-the-top cinematics of a wargame and making it function in the nitty-gritty, granular way that a good RPG demands.

EN – Tactical combat is a large part of many fantasy RPGs. How much of a role will it have in the IK RPG?

SB – Our game really shines when you pull out some miniatures and a tape measure, but like most RPGs it’s not absolutely necessary. Some elements of our wargame have been removed, like the importance of facing, which helps keep the game feel fluid and prevents the feeling of constricted choices as in a board game. We do use the base sizes of WARMACHINE, small 30mm bases, medium 40mm bases, and large 50mm bases but don’t utilize trickier elements like volume and some line-of-sight rules. Our goal has been to take the core mechanics we understand and add or omit new elements as necessary. For example, “Take Cover” is an action in the RPG unlike a passive bonus in WARMACHINE. We’ve worked hard to makes sure the game plays like an RPG and encourages players to use their skills and abilities creatively.

EN – In the preview video, players can be seen moving miniatures on a terrain board (as opposed to grids or hexes). Will this be the default method for determining location in combat?

SB – We don’t really expect anyone to use terrain when playing out combat in the game. We just happen to have a lot of beautiful wargaming terrain laying around the office, so it’s hard to resist dropping it into our sessions! In actuality, we tend to sketch battle maps out as needed on paper or white board. Some of our upcoming scenarios will feature pre-made battle maps but in general we expect Game Masters will just draw up their own maps as necessary.

EN – Politics abound in the Iron Kingdoms fluff. How much will it influence play in the RPG?

SB – I think the setting of the Iron Kingdoms is one of the richest and most fully realized worlds ever created for a role-playing game. The first book contains a great deal of material describing what it’s like to live in the nations of the Corvis treaties and where possible we discussed the political realities. We’ll return to those ideas in more depth in the second book which focuses very specifically on the four modern nations of the Iron Kingdoms, those being Cygnar, Khador, Ord, and the Protectorate of Menoth, as well as the essentially fallen state of Llael. More exotic nations and locations will have their time in the spotlight in future volumes.

EN – Can PCs from warring nations be in the same party? If yes, how will it work out in play?

SB – That’s the kind of decision we leave up to the Game Master and his or her players. We’ve done our best to describe a world with logical and rational allies and enemies. In most cases, we assume that the characters are at least mostly on the same side. Some tension is fun, and I can see ways that a group of mercenaries might contain a pretty disparate group, but in both the setting and the rules we’re assuming that teamwork is going to be part of how people play the game.

Later on, we’ll be adding rules for players to portray more exotic races like bog trogs, gatormen, and skorne, but we don’t really intend for those characters to be used in groups with more traditional adventurers. Instead, we envision using those characters to tell different kinds of stories and explore other kinds of adventures. A group of bog trogs and gatormen might be on a mission for the Blindwater Congregation, or the players might be exploring the vicious politics of the Skorne Empire as Paingivers in service to a Dominar.

Ultimately, our intention has been to offer a giant toolbox for people to explore the parts of the Iron Kingdoms that excite or intrigue them the most.

EN – Are there mechanics for social/intellectual combat? What are they like?

SB – Not “combat,” per se, but we’ve included numerous social or mental based skills. Cryptography, Tracking, and Research are just a few of these sorts of skills that could be very important over the course of an Iron Kingdoms adventure.

EN – The Iron Kingdoms is a dynamic setting and many things have changed since the original RPG products and the first Warmachine rule book. What will the default starting chronology be? What events have already occurred and what will as the game progresses?

SB – We’ve chosen to set the RPG in 608 AR, which is in the immediate past of the ongoing story of WARMACHINE and HORDES. For readers familiar with our wargaming story, this is the time immediately after the events of Legends but before Wrath. It’s a great time for adventuring because the nations of the Iron Kingdoms have recently engaged in a series of protracted wars but are currently licking their wounds during a fragile ceasefire. Choosing this time period let us update the world beyond the original RPG books without making the default setting a place of all-out war. There’s a lot of tension and intrigue in this time period and it’s only a matter of time before war breaks out again but the characters won’t have to spend all their time worrying about dodging columns of warjacks and raging battlefields. Mostly.

EN – How will you juggle honoring the fiction that has helped create and define the world while allowing the PCs to feel that their actions can have an impact on the story (aka. The “Lord of the Rings quandary”)? For example: Could the PCs prevent the occupation of Llael or the death of Hirearch Garrick Voyle

SB – That’s really up to the Game Masters and players out there! We’re going to continue to advance the stories of WARMACHINE and HORDES but we don’t expect every campaign to keep up with those events. For now, all of our plans for upcoming RPG material will be set in 608 AR. If players want to keep pace with the wargame’s story, they can certainly do so but we don’t intend to marry the RPG to an ongoing narrative. The material will be there for groups that want to follow that meta-story but it’s by no means necessary.

EN – What gets you the most excited about the IK RPG? What are your favorite aspects of the game?

SB – Man, I don’t even know where to start! I’ve been a role playing gamer for almost twenty years and an Iron Kingdom fan for the better part of a decade, so being on this creative team has really been a dream job. If I had to pick just one thing, I’d say it’s our dual Career system. Letting players choose from two Careers each with unique skills and abilities instead of a single class or just an arbitrary range of skills opened up some great possibilities. We wanted to make sure that any character you make for this game will feel like a citizen of the Iron Kingdoms, not just a generic fantasy adventurer, and picking two Careers really accomplishes that. The Iron Kingdoms aesthetic has a real “bodged together” feel to it, and choosing two Careers makes you feel it. My favorite character during play test was a criminal underboss who used the Cut-throat and Duellist careers but I also had loads of fun playing a Gun Mage/Highwayman.

If I get to pick a second thing it’s the Adventuring Companies that was a pet project of mine in development. I blogged about those in a Privateer Insider and we’ll have more on those in No Quarter Magazine soon, so I won’t get into the details, but they’re a tool for players and Game Masters to create coherent groups of adventurers who make sense within the world of the Iron Kingdoms.

EN -Thank you for the interview!

SB – My pleasure! I can’t wait to see this game in people’s hands at Gen Con 2012 and we’ll be sure to talk to Play Unplugged at the show!

Ca semble difficile de jouer un génie quand on n'est pas soi-même un foudre de guerre ( l'inverse étant beaucoup plus aisé). C'est ainsi que le jet de compétence/connaissance tout arbitraire fut inventé ;D.
